Turkey Takedown

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

It must be the colour of my eyes – bugs are attracted to them.  That’s the only explanation I have.

Earlier this summer, I got smoked in the eyeball by a massive bug.  It threw me off so much I actually veered off the bike path and bawled my eyes out.  Tonight was a repeat performance.

At the last minute, I decided I’d leave the shades at home.  I’m biking merrily along (I was in a good mood – “merrily” is totally appropriate) and bam! the bug hits my eyeball.  And it burned like… like… like last time.  Unfortunately, I was on the road besides cars.  I hit the curb but didn’t actually fall off my bike.  I just made a big scene. :)

Do you know what happens when your eye is on fire?  Your nose runs like a tap.

Or at least, mine does.

So after my eyeball hiatus, I continue on biking to the gym, only to arrive with a snot face, a bright pink eyeball and a swollen eye lid.  What a prize.

But, I did have a stellar workout!  So take that, crusty bug.

… I try not to think about this, but if you get something in your eye, i.e. a nasty a bug, and  you don’t actually get it out, where does it go?  I imagine people having little empty spaces behind their eyeballs where schmuck ends up… little bugs, eyelashes, dirt.  Or in my case, two giant bugs.  Okay, sorry, that’s enough.

Let’s talk food!

I Eat

sept1 006

I’ve been enjoying some yummer oatmeal the past couple mornings.  Chilly fall air makes every bowl even more delish.

sept1 009

sept1 007

sept1 018

The bases have been the same: 1/2 c. oats + 1/2 c. almond milk + 1/2 c. water.  I guess I’m into slivered almonds lately.  And lots of almond butter.

Packed lunches have been the usual: lots of fruits, veggies and nuts, and some random bars.  But I’ve had some turkey to eat!  Leftovers from home!

sept1 016

Getting back into packed lunches after holidays is always a bummer.  Especially when it involves packed gluten free bread.  But this sandwich was pretty tasty.  The bees especially loved it… grrr…

Tonight’s supper was also more turkey but not leftovers – a grilled piece.  On the side are some sweet taters + mushrooms + red peppers.  I sprinkled turkish curry on the veggies because turkish sounds like turkey so it went with the theme. ;)

sept1 026

I was bummed at the lack of green on the plate until I told myself this was the colours of autumn.  It was lame but it made me like it more.  Ha!

sept1 024

sept1 023

Other suppers included a gluten free pizza meal…

sept1 003

And some rice pasta + chicken + mushrooms + peppers + spinach + jarred sauce for a quick Monday night dinner.

sept1 012

Dessert lately has been a whole lot of this:

Please don’t leave us, summer. :(

I Move

Yesterday I went for a 5 and a quarter km run.  It was pretty blah.  Seriously, I don’t know how some of you runners do it – how do you not get super bored?  I know running with other people is suppose to help, but still, where is the excitement?!  Oh well, good exercise anyway.

The gym tonight was great – once my eyeball stopped feeling wonky.  I did some lower body weights while I was there, but the best part was still biking there and back!  It’s been over a week without my little bicycle and how I missed him

Walking to and from the office is still a go in this beautiful weather.  It’s a great way to relax after work, and a nice way to enjoy the morning before I get to the office.

Hope your week is off to a great start!  It’s already Wednesday tomorrow… that’s pretty great, eh?

Out Of Province

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

Happy Saturday! WOOOO!  I love this day. :)

It’s going to be another hot one (already 34C with the humidex at lunch time) so I knew I had to get in my exercise early.  Otherwise, I’d be working out in the gym to take advantage of the a/c, and really, who wants to be in a gym when it’s so beautiful out?

So, the alarm went off at 6:45am and I bopped downstairs for a snack.  If you’re a night person, it may seem nasty to get up early on a Saturday morning, but I love mornings way more than nights so… it works for me, but maybe not for night owls.

aug15 001

Lots of ooey gooey peanut butter on this half nan.

Good thing this nan was on the fat side because I had one heck of a workout in store.  A couple days ago I pulled out my biking map and plotted out a new route to try.  Unfortunately, I am serverly directionally challenged.  That’s probably why I ended up in the wrong province, going completely the wrong direction half way through my ride.

Bummer.

I realized that when I looked up and saw the traffic lights flipped sideways.  Oh Quebec!  Signs are posted on the bike paths and I had my bike map with me so eventually I (sort of) figured out where I was.

It was a brutal bike ride – way too many hills on that side of the river!  My legs felt numb at the end.  A tiring 40 kilometres, 700 slaughtered calories and 2 hours later, I was back at home and ready to die eat.

But I’m revelling in the fact that that was my longest bike ride ever of life!  I may not be a speedy biker, but I definitely love being on my bike.  If you’re trying to decide what physical activities you like best and haven’t hopped on a bike in awhile, I’d encourage you to go for a ride.  Borrow a friend’s bike or if your city provides the service, rent a bike for a morning.  I promise, you’ll have fun!  At the very least you’ll feel like you’re 7 again, and that in itself is awesome.

The best of burning lots of energy – eating it back!

aug15 006

Some gluten free cinnamon raisin toast.  Mmm.

aug15 003

This pretty in pink bowl was plain yogurt + almond butter + frozen mango chunks with about one cup of frozen strawberries I whirled through the food processor.  It was like strawberry sprinkles but way better.  I liked this little disaster.

aug15 007

Tea also made the menu.

I devoured this breakie/brunch while watch some tv.  My new Saturday morning show is Property Ladder on TLC.  I know it’s been on for ages, but I like watching people demolish things, get stressed out, blow their budgets and make hardly any cash off the deal.  Is that bad? ;)

Off to do Saturday stuff… enjoy YOUR day!

Boredom Buster

Friday, August 14th, 2009

I just got in from a great evening bike ride.  Lots of interesting scenery… people out on interesting bikes, lots of dogs, strolling couples.. and even a half naked man who jumped out from behind a tree.

And it wasn’t his top half that was naked.

And no, I wasn’t in the middle of nowhere – I was at a main intersection.

Never a dull moment!

Definitely no appropriate segway can be made to connect that to breakfast, so let’s just talk oats right away…

aug13 008

Thursday morning perfection!  This was awesome.  I slept in this morning and you know what goes best with a sleep in – stove top oats.

aug13 010

Square or diamond? ;)

1/2 c. oats + half nan + unsweetened chocolate almond milk + blueberry sauce + almond butter.  A pretty simple bowl, but delish with a cup of tea and beautiful weather.

aug13 011

And speaking of oats, if you’ve ever made stovetop oats and they’ve turned green, read this to find out why that might have happened.

Lunch was also delish!  Thinking back over today, I don’t think I had anything yucky.  Bonus.

aug13 006

A yum apple + toasted cranberry Luna bar.

My main lunch was a chicken + leaf lettuce + salsa + cukes salad.  Why have I never put salsa on a leafy salad before?!  If you haven’t tried it, you should!

aug13 003

Walking to and from work was super sweaty today.  Not complaining! Not complaining!  But once I got back, I didn’t feel like a snack so I waited until supper to eat.  I mostly just threw veggies on the bbq, added chicken and steamed corn on the cob for a side.

aug13 017

aug13 020

Desserts were the best part of today!

aug13 021

Really ripe cantaloupe.

aug13 026

And more banana soft serve topped with almond butter + blackberry jam.  There was a lotta almond butter consumed today… right from the jar.  That can be fun. :)

Then, it was time to polish off the granola blobs + more jam + more almond butter, all drowning in almond milk.  I took a picture but I ate it out of the softserve bowl, and quite frankly, the photo is rather gross looking.  It was rather gluttonous. :)

But all those desserts gave me lots of energy for that spontaneous bike ride.  I had planned on today as being a rest day but honestly, the thought of being home bored me.  Bikes are boredom beaters.

Also squished into today – the appointment with the specialist.  The doctor was great; it was like talking to a sweet grandpa.  Long story short: I’ll be going in for a lovely throat/gut scoping in a couple weeks.  The doctor seems confident that it’s celiac disease, but also thinks it could be h. pylori bacteria that’s causing the stomach problems.

Either way, I don’t really care what it is as long as I find out that it’s something.  An answer could be coming soon and that’s a bit scary because I’m used to not knowing.  It’s also exciting because, well, I’m used to not knowing.  Not sure that makes much sense…

I hope your Thursday was one filled with yummy eats, a bit of movement and things you love.

New Moon

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

I bounded out of bed this morning!  Despite seeing the moon through my blinds I had lots of energy to hit the gym.  Not sure where the energy came from, but I was pumped.  I had my usual peanut butter + half nan snack.  No picture because I just didn’t feel like taking one!

I biked to and from the gym and just did weights when I got there.  I haven’t done that in awhile but it was a great half hour of working forgotten muscles.  After I got ready for work, I made a super fast smoothie (1/2 frozen nan + 3/4 c. chocolate almond milk + 1/2 c. frozen berries + 1/4 c. plain non-fat yogurt + 1/2 scoop Amazing Grass) but again, no picture.  This time it was because I was late for work.

I walked super fast to the office and had some serious calf muscle burning going on.  That happened on the walk back too, when I was trying to out-walk thunder clouds.  I won!  Yes!  That never happens.

Today’s packed lunch was good – except for one thing.  THIS:

aug11 006

ARGH ew.  For one, not good for the tum.  And it had the weirdest after taste.  I ate half and threw the rest out.  Time to donate to a roommate in need.

But the rest was delish, especially the blueberry + cucumber + sprouts + spinach + leaf lettuce + hummus salad.

aug11 003

Fruit livens up any old container of green.

aug11 007

And apples liven up just about anything.

aug11 002

And Luna bars are just plain awesome.

aug11 008

I was in need of some juicy fruit after work, and this did the trick.

aug11 009

Yummy yummy.  I had some granola blobs too, also yummy yummy.  So were chunks of chicken dipped in almond butter.  Not sure where that came from. ;)

Supper was a new recipe from Martha.  It was some sort of rice pasta + chicken + plain yogurt + lemon + fresh herbs + toasted almonds + raisins combination that had me drooling.

aug11 013

I thought it needed more green so I threw it on top of wilted spinach.

aug11 015

Another early night… might be another early morning, not sure yet.  I usually like to sleep in on Wednesdays because I hate them so much. :)

Au revoir!

Bicycles n’ Blueberries

Goooooodmorning friends!

aug8 005

This was part of my Saturday morning so far.  Pretty, eh?

I woke up at 8, even though I didn’t get to sleep until later.  Booo.  Last night’s party was lots of fun… lots of girls in wedding dresses and bridesmaid gowns (yep), great food and yummy drinks and lots of laughing.  It’s a recipe for a fun Friday night!

At least there was lots of sunshine coming through the window this morning.  Lots and lots of sunshine.  That’s so rare this summer that I knew I had to take advantage of a beautiful day.  I had planned on doing a class at the gym but the sun was calling my name. :)

First, a snack…

aug8 001

A nan half + almond butter.  Then I geared up and got my bike.  It’s been ages since I went for a real bike ride.  I did a 25km loop and soaked up the gorgeous morning.  It was one of those bike rides where I couldn’t help but think about how thankful I am for everything God has given me… so so so awesome.

My turnaround point is the Ottawa River, and this is where I used to row.

aug8 009

I love being outside. :)

After a shower, I was ready for brunch – I didn’t get a chance to eat until 11:15 so I’m calling that brunch…

I made a blueberry sauce using this recipe.  Instead of sugar, I used Splenda, but everything else I did the same.  I came across this recipe through work files, oddly enough!  It was so tasty!  A great way to use up berries that are getting old.

aug8 015

aug8 014

Brunch was gf berry waffles topped with blueberry sauce + walnuts + maple flakes.

aug8 017

Totally hit the spot.

Now I’m sipping some coconut chai tea and soon, I’m going to walk to the library.  I.  Love.  Saturdays.

Hope you can enjoy some sunshine today, too. :)
