The White Stuff Arrived

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

My weekend to-do list is ginormous.  So much to do, so little time.

Instead, I shall procrastinate with blogging.  Reading other blogs.  Thinking of blog ideas.

We were hit with a big snow storm on Wednesday and got all this snow in one big dumping…

dec12 040From green grass to 20 centimetres, I think.  It’s here to stay.  I could complain about it like I usually do, but no, this is my year to embrace winter and start loving the snow.

Bah humbug.

I Eat

Hardly any oat breakfasts to show you – I’ll explain why in the I Move section.

 dec12 009

Nothing new here.  Just 1/2 c. oats + 1/2 c. water + 1/2 c. almond milk + 1/2 nan + cinnamon + pom seeds + slivered almonds + pumpkin seeds + unsweetened coconut + peanut butter.

dec12 010

I only use the finest china on Saturdays.

dec12 035

Lots of oat bran.  There was 1 + 1/2 c. liquid mixed in, but other than that, same as the oatmeal.

It was topped with pom seeds + t-mix + lots of peanut butter.

dec12 032

Guess I’m out of peanut butter.

Buy peanut butter.  Now on the to-do list.

I have some unpretty eats, too.

dec12 012

Rice spaghetti + Mom’s spaghetti sauce.  I love pulling stuff out of the freezer and not having to think about cooking after work.  It may be ugly, but my stomach didn’t care.

Not to mention, this guy on my bowl seemed to approve of my sad looking supper.

dec12 014

A 24-year old working professional should probably not find as much enjoyment as I do eating from a bowl with puppy heads on it.

Part of the reason for digging out the spaghetti sauce is: it’s time to eat through the freezer.  Every so often, I decide the freezer is too full of frozen portions of pre-cooked food (and I have the equivalent of 10 chickens’ worth of chicken breasts in there) and I need to start eating it.  Hopefully I get through a bunch of it before I head home for Christmas.

In other news, my exciting organic food delivery arrived on Thursday!  It was pushed back a day because of the storm.  Such delicious food allows me to eat things like this:

dec12 021

dec12 030

Mixed salad greens + red onion + pom seeds + fried tofu + balsamic vinegar + avocado was one awesome supper.

The other night was an avocado sandwich and various fruits + veggies for dinner.  Here it is, topless (no shame…):

dec12 020

I have a fridge full of vegetables I’m a bit scared of and not too sure what to do with, but therein lies the challenge.  You will be seeing beets on the blog.  I’ve never really had beets before…

I Move

Wednesday – just didn’t feel like exercising.  I exercised my vocal chords instead by going for coffee with a friend and blabbing about life.  I had all the time in the world to work out because the snow made for a short work day, but I just didn’t want to.  Instead of  a full work out, I did a some plank exercises at home in front of the TV.  Sad to say, I even had my gym stuff at work… which lead me to…

Thursday – …getting up at 5:30 to hit the gym before work.  This was an experiment.  I didn’t know if logistically this schedule would get me to work on time.  I told my boss about my new early morning endeavour just in case, but I managed to make it to my desk before 8.  Excellent.  I’m a morning person and have always preferred exercising in the morning.  There’s something rewarding about getting to the office knowing my work out is already done.  I don’t have to think about it at 3 o’clock when I’m sleepy and ready to go home.  I did 40 minutes of cardio split between the treadie and the bike.  This schedule also means I’m eating microwaved oats at my desk.  I eat 1/2 a nan + pb before the gym and then have a real breakfast afterward.

Friday – A repeat of Thursday, up in the darkness and off to the gym.  I did 20 minutes of cardio split between the elliptical and the bike and then did lower body strength training for another 20 minutes.  My legs are feeling it today.  Oh!  And I discovered the joy of the skipping rope.  Now that’s a way to get your heart rate up.  I was the only person there at the start of my work out – creepy – but eventually a couple other people showed up.  Hopefully I can keep this schedule going!

Saturday – this afternoon, I’m going to hot yoga.  I missed it on Tuesday so I’m ready for a good stretch in a hot room, especially since it’s –16C right now with the windchill.  Nasty.

Adi!  Adi!  Come here and get us!

Oh… right… my dirty clothes are calling me.  Time to start some laundry.

Enjoy your Saturday!

Screen Sickness

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

Sometimes I get tired of looking at a computer screen.  I spend way too much time in front of one – all day at work, and most evenings when I’m home I’m on my laptop.  Today I’m especially tired of it, so this post is going to be short.  But, before I go any further, here are two things worth noting:

  1. I signed up for an organic food delivery program and assuming the looming snowstorm doesn’t render traffic immobile, I should get my first delivery tomorrow.  It’s going to be like Christmas when I come home from work and get to see what the delivery person dropped off.
  2. Oatonomy is getting a concept overhaul.  I’m still working out the details, but in 2010, expect to see a brand new blog with a brand new mission.  Should be exciting…

That is kale + cauliflower stoup and the Rachel Ray recipe is here.  I can honestly say it took less than 30 minutes to make.  No false advertising.  Pretty good, but I had no roasted red peppers and it would have tasted fantastic if I added some.

dec8 082 It would appear that I love eating from bowls.  Hmmm.

I Move

Sunday – saw Jim and did about 25 minutes on the elliptical, followed by chest + triceps, followed by a late bus that I waited 40 minutes for, followed by a ranting session with my roommates about how brutal OcTranspo can be.

Monday – I got stuck at the office, knee-deep in the wonderful world of speech writing.  Weee!  I’m not complaining though, I love that stuff.  (Worry not, words like “weee!” don’t make it into speeches.  And that’s why blogging is great.)  I canned any thought of a work out, and at then as I was sitting on the couch later, stuffing myself with countless clementines, I decided a run was in order.  Too bad I was running in fresh snow which is the same as running in sand.  Makes the legs sore!  I think I did just over 6km.

Tuesday – hot yoga?  Nope.  I left work early due to a bout of extreme dizziness.  My co-worker and boss both informed me that I looked “horrible” (and used other, less kind words to state the obvious).  I’m seeing two laptop screens right now which suggests I’m still not back to normal.  I’m honestly blaming it on the mango I ate.  All this to say - it`s a no-workout day.

Time to go screen-less and read one of those olden day things we like to call books.

Bye for now,

Adi

Santa Shuffled

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

Woohoo, I did a 5k race!

I can finally say I’ve done one.  I can’t believe it.  I was surrounded by hundreds (?) of runners, many of whom wore Santa hats and reindeer ears, some in Christmas pyjamas, others dressed as elves, all out on a Saturday morning to run for fun.  The atmosphere was so positive, Christmas music was blasting, kids and dogs were running loose.

I think I came in around 29 minutes, but I’m not totally sure.  It took me awhile to actually get up to the start line once the race began (I started way at the back of the pack) and then could not get around a motorcade of baby strollers.  At the beginning, I had to walk for a bit before people started spreading out.

But my goal was accomplished: to run a race and enjoy it.  Check and check.  I’m so glad I did it – thanks for the encouragement!

I Eat

In order to Santa shuffle, warm oats are a required breakfast.

dec5 044

This was 1/2 c. oats + 1/2 c. almond milk + 1/2 c. water + 1/2 nan + cinnamon + pumpkin seeds + raisins + flax seeds + peanut butter + running excitement.

dec5 050

Other breakfasts in the last couple of days…

dec5 035

Totally a TGIF breakfast.  Some GF toast + egg + bacon + tom + cheese slivers.  Not sure my tummy was digging le fromage, but the rest tasted great.  I had some grapefruit too.

dec5 039

I had zucchini in the fridge and was craving zucchini batter oats so, naturally, I made some.

dec5 003

The usual oats, but added 1/2 grated zucchini and topped it with cacao nibs + slivered almonds + peanut butter and stirred in some raisins.

dec5 006

And this bowl was utterly forgettable.

dec5 022

That wraps up breakfasts.  Lunches have been at work but today’s lunch is definitely photo worthy.  Unfortunately, my camera cord is far away from me and I don’t want to go get it.  I’ll post it next time – but to prevent you from dying of suspense, it was rice pasta + chicken + zucchini + green pepper + ginger + evoo + balsamic vinegar + fresh parsley.

Isn’t comfort food, um, comforting?  I wanted some the other night so I settled on mashed taters and filled my plate up with way too much other good stuff.

dec5 029

dec5 023

dec5 027

Roasted chicken + roasted brussell sprouts + mixed frozen veggies + mashed taters with parsley.

And surprise!  I ate the exact same thing last night.

I Move

Wednesday – nothing serious, just walked to and from the office.  I was too busy socializing with a friend to exercise. :)

Thursday – I got home, put on my track pants with elasticized ankles loungewear and plopped myself on my bed.  Was I going to work out?  Nooo way, Hosea.  Then, I started watching LL Cool J videos on Youtube and felt like going for a run.  What?!  Motivation comes from weird places.  I changed into running clothes and went for a short, brisk nighttime jog.  Afterwards, I felt great.

Friday – Does walking to do 100 errands count?  I went to pick up my race kit and on the walk there, watched a car accident happen.  I did my civic duty and made sure everyone was okay – they were – and continued on my way.  After I got my stuff, I bought a foam roller.  Anyone tried using one of those torture tubes?  I came home and did these exercises and they hurt, but my legs felt awesome after.  I’m pretty sure it costs 50 cents to manufacture one of those things and I coughed up 30 bucks.  Trying not to think about it… trying not to think about it…

Saturday – Ran with other people for the first time in my 24 years of living.  Well, unless you count my old track days.  I was a sprinter and not a long distance runner, which wasn’t really conducive to chatting with people while moving.  Give me a baton and tell me to run 100 metres and I’ll run hard for a short time and have no problems, but tell me to ease up and run for half an hour?  Now that I have a problem with.  One of these days it will start to feel easier.  Maybe.

Off to make a new recipe for dinner and then bowling with friends.   Goooo bowling!

Turn Your Year Around

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Do you write out New Year’s Resolutions?  If you look back on your list for 2009, did you accomplish what you set out to?

Don’t feel bad if you didn’t.  I didn’t.  I’m guessing 95% of people didn’t and the 5% who did are part alien.

But, there’s still time!  If you set lofty goals to accomplish then it might be harder to reach them with a month left in the year, but…

you can still do something to get close, right?

I wanted to run a half-marathon in 2009.  I didn’t.  The beginning of the year started out great and then BOOM, my tummy adventure began and feeling sick all the time doesn’t help a girl trying to run.  I’m feeling somewhat better now, but my goals have shifted and I don’t have the same drive to run that distance.

Still, I’m determined not to let 2009 end as a race-less year.  And that is why, my friends, I am running a 5 K Santa Shuffle Fun Run this weekend.

I hope “shuffle” is an indication of the speed at which people run this.  I am petrified, but darn it, I’m going to run a race!  It’s about time I try.

I Eat

To the food front.

 dec1 007

A classic bowl of delish.  Just an easy 1/2 c. oat bran + 1 c. water + 1/2 c. almond milk + 1/2 nan + cinnamon + cranberry sauce + t-mix + bluebs + peanut butter.

dec1 011

This morning called for an unconventional Tuesday brekkie.  I still wanted some oatage, so I mushed them into pancake form.

dec1 025

I mixed 1/2 c. oats + 1/2 mush ripe nan + 1 whole egg + maybe 1/4 tsp. baking powder + cinnamon.  Once the pan heated up, I plopped the mush into circle shapes, let them bubble on top, flipped them, threw them on the plate, and then topped them with plain yogurt + cranberry sauce + almonds + pumpkin seeds and decided it was going to be an excellent day.

My boss asked me what time I have to get up to make breakfasts like this before work when I leave my house at 7:30am.  It’s all down to a minute-by-minute routine… but I get up at 6am.  It’s worth it to me to be able to eat a yummy warm breakfast and not feel rushed.  Any other morning savourers out there?

dec1 020

Work lunches have been all about the sandwiches so far this week.  I made GF bread on the weekend, and although the mix I used wasn’t great (okay, it was also expired), it still makes an edible sandwich.

And now, suppers.  My least favourite meal of the day – unless it’s made of breakfast foods or sushi.

dec1 018

This was a left over combo.  I took frighteningly old basmati rice + broccs + tofu + mushrooms and added roasted butternut squash and decided that was good enough for me.  Then I conquered the kitchen for snacks all night, so I guess that dinner wasn’t good enough after all.  Dinners that aren’t very tasty lead me to serious snacking later.

Tonight I munched on chilli left overs from the freezer + bread.  The chilli pictures actually look like… well, just really unedible.  I don’t want anyone reading to lose their appetite.  But it sure tasted good!

I Move

Monday – a big, fat day off.  As soon as I got home from work, the track pants and hoodie were on and that was that.

Tuesday – hot yoga tonight.  I have a new habit of falling asleep in class before it starts.  This is not good.  At this rate, next week I’ll wake up in a pile of drool.   Aside from the spontaneous slumber, the class was fantastic.  I am loving yoga.

I love my bed too, which is where I’m headed ASAP.

Goodnight!

Spitty

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Have you ever tried to do something, hoping you can pull it off and make it look natural, but it doesn’t end up going as planned?

I was heading out on a run and I could feel a fuzzy thing in my mouth.  I will spit it out on the grass beside me and look all business, shooting spit as I gear up to go.

The plan backfired.

I spit all over my leg.

That never looks cool, and sure doesn’t look natural.

Note to self: don’t try to be a spitter when you’re not.

I Eat

One thing I can do is make oats that fill up a tummy.

Check out my new Christmas bowl!  My mom sent this to me for my birthday.  Who knew La Senza has moved into the dish market?

nov 29 002

nov 29 009

Toppings on this oat bran were all over the place: t-mix + bluebs + raspberries + peanut butter.

Not to be out done, the next day’s oat bran took toppings to a whole new level.

nov 29 018

Pom seeds + pumpkin seeds + bluebs + cacao nibs + peanut butter.

It would appear that the butter trumped all other oat toppers.

nov 29 016

That’s a big blob.

And Saturday’s oats, double the fun.  A friend came over for brekkie so I doubled the usual ingredients for oats: 1 c. oats + 1 c. almond milk + 1 c. water + 1 whole nan.

Friend’s bowl:

nov 29 036

My lame bowl:

nov 29 035

Today’s bowl of oats was in the American Thanksgiving spirit.  Lots of the American food blogs have been loaded with pictures of delicious food lately, so I decided to make an impromptu sugar-free cranberry sauce yesterday with leftover berries from an apple/cranberry/pecan crisp I brought to a friend’s last night for dinner.  Well, the crisp wasn’t dinner.

But imagine if that was an appropriate main course!  Half the world’s problems would be solved if we all ate apple crisp as an entree on a regular basis.

nov 29 054

Simple toppings, just cranberry sauce + slivered almonds + peanut butter.

nov 29 057

How to make a small amount of the sauce?

  • Boil 1/2 c. water + 1/3 c. Splenda until it’s bubbling.
  • Add about 1/2 a small package fresh cranberries and let the mixture come back to a boil.
  • Reduce heat, and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.
  • Take it off the heat, let it cool, and store it in the fridge.

Only one lunch to post – other lunches have been at work and today I was at East Side Mario’s for an impromptu lunch with some church peeps, and found myself cameraless.  How exciting is a chunk of chicken to look at, anyway?

Yesterday’s lunch needed some rah-rah.  I found that excitement in an ancient butternut squash in our potato drawer.  Really, I can’t even remember when I bought the thing, and I like to think my memory is decent.

So that’s scary.

I roasted it with some extra virgin olive oil + cinnamon and thought it tasted A-okay.  I still have all ten fingers.

nov 29 046

On top of some spinach + green onions and sprinkled with pom seeds + balsamic vinegar and a bit of S n’ P

nov 29 044

And a side of GF toast + laughing cow fromage.

nov 29 050

Suppers?  Mostly MIA.

nov 29 019

Salmon salad + GF bread + baby spinach + tom slices.

nov 29 025

And green beans because they were seeing their final days.

One another dinner was a pathetic Sandwich Supper with yellow-tinged photographs.

Yellow-tinged photographs look like they should smell weird.  Do you know what I mean?  They’ve been vetoed.

Last night’s dinner was a great meal at a friend’s place.  In addition to delicious gluten-free food, the company was entertaining and I might have had too much fun. :) Getting up early this morning was painful.  Good thing I could hear the oats calling from the kitchen.

Now, here’s a sample of the highlight from the last few days:

nov 29 027

A friend baked me sugar-free, GF brownies and they.  are.  divine.

Umm, they were divine.  I ploughed through half a large pan in two days.  Am I embarrassed?  No, because if you tasted them and hadn’t eaten a brownie in over a year, I’m sure you would have done that too!  Unless you have self control, which I clearly don’t have, but that’s for another post.  So, so delish.

nov 29 028

nov 29 031

It makes me sad to look at those pictures and know they are gone.  The good news?  My friend had brownie mix left over so I not only got plenty of brownies, I have the mix to make more!

Dangerous.

I Move

Thursday – off to see Jim after work.  I did 10 minutes on the bike to warm up and then headed to the free weights for an unenergetic twenty minutes.  What a lazy workout!  I was annoyed with myself for not putting in any effort.  So, I walked home from the gym.  It was a mild night, so nice for November, and I had my home church that evening.  Solution to a sad workout?  Make up for it later!  After walking back from the gym and eating a quick supper, I pumped up my tires and biked the few kilometres to and from home church.  It felt awesome and even though it started raining on my way back, I think I was smiling the whole way … I’ve been missing my bike!  Exercise intention fulfilled.

Friday – a good run on the treadie.  Heading to the gym right after work on Fridays can be tough, but it’s always a choice I’m glad I made.  It gets the weekend started right!

Saturday – I jogged a short 2 km to the office gym (I think I need to go back to see my other Jim for a change…) and did some core + chest weight training.  It was focused and logical movement – and left me hurting the next morning, in a good way.  I jogged back home

Sunday – I hadn’t planned on doing anything today because I am tired.  All of a sudden, I just felt like going outside and doing a short run.  Why?  I don’t know, I don’t question these things, I just go with it.  I had a snacky, munchy afternoon and it’s easy for me to reign that in if I go work out.  Also cool?  It was my first evening run in a really long time and I got to see Christmas lights in the neighbourhood.  It was nice.

I was also chased by a dog the size of my foot named Champagne.  He (she?) tried to bite my ankles and I almost clomped on its little paws.  Its owners were chasing her down the road.  Oh Champagne, bad little puppy.

Time to find something to eat for supper… maybe I’ll just have something snacky…

Have a great week!
