The only things certain in life are death and taxes… – Ben Franklin

… and that I can’t control my greedy appetite around delicious food. - Adi

Sunday’s sushi gorging is a perfect example – put me in a situation where I can eat a lot of something delicious, and I will.  I don’t have the off switch… or it’s permanently jammed in the “on” position.

This is the same as having treats in the house.  If I have a bag of dates in the cupboard, I will eat them.  Right away.  At once.  So, I stopped buying them.

My general rule of thumb now is if I can’t stop eating it, I can’t buy it.  It’s a pretty harsh commandment, but one day, I’m sure I’ll be able to control my date-ing and won’t consider AYCE sushi a physical personal challenge.

I think Heather posted about this ages ago, specifically about having sugar around the house.  If it wasn’t your blog, my bad!  Some witty blogger posted about it and I remembering agreeing whole heartedly.  Some of us lack control, that’s all. ;)

I Eat

As a direct result of the sushi chaos on Sunday, breakfast on Monday was packed up and brought to the office so I could eat it when I actually felt like there was room in my stomach again.

nov11 003

I had (1/3 c.) overnight oats soaked in some pomegranate applesauce and topped with half a nan + + peanut butter + trail mix.

nov11 004

The oats are buried under the topping bonanza.

Bananza?

Tuesday’s oat bran was topped with alien brains + snow (read: pecans + unsweetened coconut).

nov11 014

nov11 022

I also had some pumpkin seed butter for the first time.  It’s alright.  Didn’t rock my world but I’ve had worse butters.

Today’s oats did make my day off (happy Remembrance Day!) even better.  Yep, another old peanut butter jar saved for this one.

nov11 030

Smelly gym shoes make for great scene setting.

nov11 035

New oats addition today – the great cacao nib.  Why I thought they would melt, I’m not sure.  They stayed kind of crunchy, and with the almonds, there was a lot of chew going on.  And yet, I was loving this 1/2 c. oats + almond milk + cinnamon + 1/2 nan + peanut butter galore.

If anyone wants to send me their used nut butter jars that have just a bit of the good stuff in them, I will gladly take them off your hands.

Work lunches have been boring salads + chicken + chickpeas and various snacky stuff.  One of these days, my work lunches will be brilliant, it just won’t be any day soon.

Today’s lunch was good though, because I got to eat at home and not at my cubicle!  Wooo!

nov11 037

nov11 039

Shaking things up with an open-faced avocado + bacon (!) + toms sammy and a side of carrots.

nov11 041

So scrumptious.  Then I made a big apple crisp for my church peeps for tomorrow, but decided that every apple needed to be sampled.  I taste-tested each apple core for quality control.

Quality was controlled.  I got a tummy ache.  Too much apple.

Monday’s supper was awesome.  Yes!  Curried cauliflower + chickpeas.

nov11 007

Here’s what I did:

  • sautee a diced onion in extra virgin olive oil
  • add half a cauliflower head, broken into small pieces
  • add 1 tbsp. curry powder (my curry powder is old, so it’s not very strong – this may be too much for some!)
  • after about five minutes, add 1/2 c. chickpeas and a handful of raisins
  • squirt in a couple squirts of lemon juice and add a sprinkle of sea salt
  • let everything warm through, then serve on brown rice

Mmmm.  And I have leftovers!  This was tasty.

Last night`s supper was thrown together fast because I was starving after yoga.  It was a basic baked chicken + stir fried veggie + basmati rice meal.

nov11 023

Yes, I was really hungry.

Tonight’s supper starts with an S.  It ends with an I.  It’s an addiction that’s costing me my life savings.

Yes, you guessed it, so let’s move right along!  (Ohh but it was fabulous.  I love Sushi 88, really.)

I Move

Monday – Jim did not call me, so I did a home workout instead.  Sometimes the thought of being in the gym just won’t cut it.  I did an upper body workout with some free weights.  It was a good half hour of hurting my muscles.

Tuesday – sweat fest.  I missed hot yoga.  Last week, the fevers were all the heat I could handle, so I was excited to get back to the studio.  It was a new teacher and her style was a bit different, but in a good way.  Good stretching all around.

Wednesday – with the day off work, I started the morning with the gym – okay, oats, then gym.  I just did the elliptical and about five minutes of weights before I had to chase down the bus.

Back to work tomorrow for two days and then the weekend!  A mid-week holiday is really, really weird.  I keep think it’s Saturday but it’s only the worst day of the week.  But now it’s over!  And tomorrow I donèt have time to squeeze in any exercise, so it’s a rest day, too.

Be back soon…

Adi

PS – thanks for all the congratulations on the Zesty makeover!  I’m pumped to see how it will turn out…

Oatonomy’s Getting Zesty-ed

Monday, November 9th, 2009

Before Friday, the coolest thing I had ever won was a keychain flashlight.  The coolest thing I’ve ever won also happens to be the saddest draw prize of all time.  Really, what am I going to do with that?

But it was free, and I won it after all, and I never win anything.  Ever.  If ninety-nine pieces of paper with my name on it were thrown into a bowl, and one piece of paper that said “Adi never wins anything” was also thrown in, guess which one would be picked?  Statistics would say there was a 99% chance my name would be drawn.

Statistics aren’t reality though, and I guarantee the “Adi never wins anything” would be drawn instead.

So imagine my sheer delight, my endless excitement, the annoying squealing that came about when I saw that I won Zesty’s blog make over contest!  I think I almost know what dying of happiness would feel like, because that’s what nearly happened.

A billion big thanks to Zesty – and after he works his bloggy magic, I hope you’ll come back and see what he’s done to Oatonomy.  I’m sure he’ll do a fantastic job.

I Eat

Lately, eating seems to be all I’ve been doing.  It’s time for me to pull in the reigns.  I’ll show you some oatmeal pictures anyways…

nov8 001

Too bad all the full bowl shots are blurry.  Argh.

The other thing I’ve been doing, besides eating, is stopping nose bleeds.  Nose bleeds are never in fashion, friends, especially when you’re at work.  That’s no way to impress the boss – but it’s a sure fire way to creep him out.  I’m trying to keep the bleeding from the nose to a minimum at the office.  Today is the first day post-pig flu I haven’t had one – and here’s to hoping it stays that way.  Ick.

nov8 024

nov8 028

Ah yes, oats in the almond butter jar.  Is there anything more divine?  If the stars collide, pigs fly and money starts growing on a tree in the backyard – all in the same day – and I end up getting married, I think an oatmeal buffet served in old nut butter jars is a must at a reception.  A wedding for the books!  (Okay, maybe people wouldn’t be saying positive things about it, but they’d remember it…)

One of the best things about a weekend is weekend lunches.  Lunches that aren’t eaten out of Tupperware containers, not at a desk, and not partially heated through from a rotten office microwave, are a good thing.

This was a seriously good turkey + lettuce + tom + red onion + Miracle Whip sandwich and an apple, to keep the doctor away.  I don’t really want to go see her again.

nov8 033

nov8 029

nov8 037

I’ve been eating lots of these GF banana-blueberry muffins lately.  By “lots” I mean about fifteen pounds worth of them.

nov8 041

I’m on my way to becoming Veronica Salt from Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.  I’ll turn into a blueberry and just roll around the rest of my life.  I think she was pretty happy when she met her demise though, so it wouldn’t be all that bad.  Right?

Today’s lunch was good too…

nov8 062

Some eggers on some bread.  Didn’t say it was exciting!  I ate muchos watermelon after this.  It’s a balmy 16 degrees here today and I wanted to pretend it’s summer.

Ooo, almost forgot this morning’s breakfast.  I ate this pink sludge at the tech booth at church.  It was overnight oats made with 1/2 c. oats + 1/2 c. plain yogurt + 1/2 c. pomegranate applesauce + cinnamon + honey + pecans.

nov8 053

It hung out in the fridge last night and made for a tasty breakfast while I pretended like I knew what I was doing with an audio mixing board.  Unfortunately, I fooled no one.

In a couple of weeks, the teaching pastor is going to be speaking about – gasp! – blogs.  Well, blogging and Facebook and twitter and all those fun things.  It’s part of a series called “Get Over Yourself” – ha!  Maybe if he loved oatmeal he would understand the need to blog about it…

Suppers have been excellent – because I didn’t make them!  A friend dropped by some yummy soups that I’ve been loving.  The first was a chicken ginger soup that I ate with some raw veggies + hummus + awful “biscuit”.

nov8 019

nov8 013

nov8 022

The other soup was a ham + leek + broccs soup that I had with toast.

 nov8 047 nov8 043

Definitely loved them both!  Know what I also love?  Sushi.  I ate some serious raw fish + rice with my roommates tonight.  It’s been too long, my sushi, too long.  Did I eat too much?  Yes.  Did we end up hiding sushi in our purses to avoid paying their eyes-are-bigger-than-your-tummy fee?  Absolutely.  Does my bag smell like wasabi?  No comment.

I Move

Not exercising makes me feel yucky.  I’ve been itching to get back into a workout routine since I’ve been sick.

Friday – back to the gym for some ellipticalling + bit of lower body weights.  Oh, Jim, I missed you so.

Saturday – laced up the runners and did a breezy 5k in the neighbourhood.  I ran through a park that has been overtaken by Canada geese.  No, I didn’t see any geese, but they left evidence behind.  I had to dodge their poop all over the running path.  I felt like I was doing tire conditioning, not running.  Other than that, a pretty uneventful run.

Sunday – time to enjoy the spring-ish weather!  I did a 9.5k run along the canal.  One thing I love about Ottawa is how active the city is.  There were lots of people out running and biking, all ages, some alone and some with families or friends.  I saw one guy doing the cross country “skiing” on skate shoes, too.  It’s easy to get out there and get going in this city and I don’t take that for granted.

And because I wanted to feel like I was 8 years old and my bike allows that to happen every time I ride it, I biked to the grocery store.  It takes me three minutes, so it’s not exactly taxing, but it was fun.  J’adore ma bicyclette!

Is it really Monday tomorrow?  Feels like I have lots to tackle at work, so maybe the day will go by quickly…

Hope all is well at your corner of the globe!

Adi

Au Revoir, Oinky

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Ahh, I think it’s safe to say I’m rid of the swine flu.  Hooray!  Except now I have a cold.  I’m getting a season’s worth of illness in the course of two weeks.

… yes, I was a big baby for the last week.  H1N1 is a nasty flu to have.  I sweat more from the multiple, never-ending fevers than I ever do in hot yoga – and my body was way more sore than it ever is after running or lifting weights.

Good thing for roommates, friends and my mom!  I’ve never been checked up on so often, or had so much food dropped off to me.  Thank you to all of you!  And thanks for all the well wishes on the blog – it cheered me up. :)

I hadn’t eaten oats for days.  Canned peaches though?  I’m going to turn into one.  In the book I was reading, the one character said she thought of canned peaches as low brow food.  Piper obviously had never tasted them – she’d change her mind as soon as she bit into a cold, slightly metallic tasting peach from a can.  Bliss.

I Eat

Normalcy tastes delicious.  This was some apple pie oat bran.

nov5 008

Currently occupying space in my stomach is 1/2 c. oat bran + 1 1/2 c. water + 1 small Macintosh apple + vanilla + cinnamon + almonds + raisins + dried out almond butter.

I nuked the apple slices for about a minute before I mixed them with the oat bran.  The rest of the apple I threw on top.  It smelled like pie for breakfast.

nov5 002

Raisins like to stick together.

I’ve been working from home this week, which means I’m always less than 20 seconds from the kitchen, which promotes constant eating.  I have no idea how some of you work-at-home girls do it – I’ve worn a path straight from the couch to the cupboard.

Back to the office tomorrow, though – yes!  And no, there’s not a hint of sarcasm there.  I’m looking forward to being there.

I worked and ate and apparently, forgot to take a picture of my pho noodle soup.  It was awesome!  Then I snacked all afternoon.  Must.  Reign.  In.  Snacking.

Did some more work in the afternoon, ventured out and spread my germs to people at the public library, and had a bowl of apple-cinnamon-curry chili when I got home with some homemade bread.  Both came out of the freezer – love those nights.  I’ll post the chili recipe soon.

nov5-2 003

nov5-2 007

I make ugly chili but it tastes good, for real.

And yep, that would be a Wheel of Fortune Word Seek on the table.  That’s the kind of fun thing I do when I’m sick, instead of blogging.  I figure it’s better for my brain than a colouring book.

I Move

I am craving exercise.  I’m trying to be patient and let my body get over being sick, but I’m so antsy to get back to the gym.  So, to slowly ease myself back into not being the couch’s tumour, I’m going to do some yoga tonight from yogadownload.com.  Reading lots of bloggers’ posts about great runs, workouts and new exercises isn’t helping!  Patience, patience, patience…

Good to be back though! :)

Food Friends-y

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Potlucks define the relationship between food and fellowship.  A group of people that gets together, each one bringing food to share with the others, spending time with one another and food is at the centre of it all.  Better than a dinner party or a fancy restaurant meal, a potluck means everyone brings a favourite dish or something they know others will love, pile up their plates with a ton of different foods, and digs in while hanging out with people they (hopefully) love.

Is there anything better for someone who loves food and friends?  I think not.

Lunch today was, obviously, a delicious potluck.  Unfortunately, something I ate didn’t make friends with my digestive system, but that’s okay because whatever it was, was worth eating. :)

I Eat

So the potluck was Sunday lunch, and yesterday’s lunch was more eating with friends at AYCE sushi.  No photos of that smorgasbord, or the potluck, because sometimes I get too busy chatting with peeps that I forget to take food pics.

I wouldn’t dare forget to photograph my lovely breakfasts, though. :)

oct26 002

This was the last of my (1/2 c.) oat bran, with 1 c. water + 1/2 c. almond milk + 1/2 nan + cinnamon + banana nut granola + cinnamon + almond butter.

oct26 024

Mmm, GF waffles + yogurt + trail mix + cinnamon.  And a dried out egg on the side.

oct26 029

Today’s oatmeal was prettiest.  The usual nan base with raspberries + slivered almonds + pumpkin seeds + peanut butter on top.

oct26 038

oct26 039

oct26 036

And a whole lot of sunshine was served alongside this one.  Delish.

Supper on Friday was a beige meal.  It was craving colour, and I didn’t deliver.

oct26 011

Baked seasoned chicken + leftover mashed tater + baked onions + zucchini.  The chicken breast was huge so I only ate half, and saved the other half for the Sunday night stir fry.

oct26 014

These green disks were the best part.

Supper last night?  Oatmeal!  It was a mini bowl from the microwave and was hideous looking and deserved no photo.  Yep, that bad.

Supper tonight was a pretty normal stir fry.  Some chicken + onion + broccs + toms on top of basmati rice made for a quick supper.

oct26 043

oct26 045

I love broccs these days… the little green trees of tasty.

I Move

Friday – I hit the gym after work and did a quick treadmill warm up and then triceps + shoulders with free weights.  It felt a bit half-hearted, but my arms are a bit sore two days later, so maybe I did more than I realized?  One can hope.

Saturday – I shopped until I dropped.  Shopping all morning is a lot of walking!  Carrying heavy bags makes it harder, too. ;)  I was pooped when I got home and promptly planted myself on the couch for the night.

Sunday – Out for a run just shy of 11k this afternoon.  I was really tired after the potluck, but after a snack of an apple + tea, I decided to gear up and get out the door.  I’m amazed at how much your head plays into running.  My head was in it, and I could zone out for good chunks of it just thinking about recent conversations, future goals, the week ahead and dream vacations.  It ended up being my longest run in a few weeks.  My legs are tired in a very good way.

Ahh, tomorrow is Monday.  Mondays always fly by, I find.  Back to the routine… but before that, I have a tea + blog reading evening ahead of me.

Hope you had a great weekend!

Mushaboom

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Tomorrow is Friday.  Where did the week go?!  I love when that happens.  Disappearing weeks should be mandatory for all federal government employees.  And for everybody.

I Eat

Oats in a jar should also be a mandatory breakfast every single Wednesday.  Too bad the lighting wasn’t agreeing with my camera – most of the shots didn’t turn out.

oct22 011

Believe me when I say this jar was loaded with oat bran and t-mix toppings.  Of course, there was a ridiculous amount of peanut butter consumed, too.  I think that might just be the secret to having a good hump day: eat excessive nut butter.

Today’s oats were way more photogenic.  They must have seen ANTM last night.

oct22 030

oct22 035

This was 1/2 c. oat bran + 1/2 c. almond milk + 1 c. water + 1/2 nan + cinnamon + almond slices + pumpkin seeds + flax + peanut butter + cinnamon.

I love you.

oct22 037

The infamous Crate and Barrel spoon that shows up in oat bowls around the blogosphere is great because it’s small, which makes Oat Devourers slow down the devouring process.  However, it lacks a sharp edge.  That means I can’t scrape every last ounce of yum out of my bowl, which leads me to consider licking the bowl.

This, friends, is one of the joys of being a single girl and eating breakfast in solitude. ;)

Last night’s supper was kind of lacking in, I don’t know, a lot.  I took a chicken breast and covered it with some dijon + rosemary + salt n pepa and baked it, paired it with some mashed taters (eeee! yum) and steamed carrots, and declared it dinner.

oct22 019

And no, this is not a full sized dinner plate – I like the taters, but not that much.

The rest of the chicken + tato leftovers were lunch at work today.

oct22 016

Up close and personal with the rosemary.

I turned into a munch face after and snacked the night away!  It’s that darn Bear Naked Banana Nut granola.  Killing me slowly.

Tonight’s supper could easily win me number one spot in the most pathetic looking plate category for the food photography awards.

But it tasted awesome!

oct22 043

There was no way to make this look nice.  Maybe if I stood the toast upright and drew a face on it with ketchup, it would have been an improvement.

oct22 040

Inside the double egg omelette was mushies + spinach + green onion.  Normally I throw the shrooms in raw, but tonight I cooked them a bit first and it made a big difference.  Way tastier, much more mushaboom.

I Move

Wednesday – I savoured my rest day and did nothing. :) Well, I walked to work, but that was it.

Thursday – Walked to work, ran on the treadmill after work.  Have you ever tried a new cardio machine and because you’re not used to it, find it hard to get a sense of balance?  I’ve tried two different treadmills at the office gym, and for both of them, it takes me the first third of my time to stop feeling like I’m going to fall off the side.  I was actually running and holding onto the machine with one hand for a few minutes.  It’s the strangest feeling… please don’t tell me I’m the only one!

Alright, time to get ready for Friday.  I’m sensing a good weekend on the horizon… partly because two foodie favourites are coming – potluck and sushi.  No weekend can be bad when it includes both those!

Have a good one, and thanks for stopping by Oatonomy. :)
