Ketchup Time

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

Looks like I haven’t posted all week!  I’ve been too busy doing other fun things. :)  Oddly, I don’t have many pictures, either.  I did a lot of eating on the run and ate out for a couple meals and I didn’t snap any photos.

Time to do some catch up.  Ketchup?

Here’s what I managed to grab…

I Eat

Re-toasted weekend waffles are enjoyed immensely on a weekday. :) I had these on Tuesday – yes, Monday was reheated office oats.

jan15 010

I threw trail mix + cinnamon on top and added some almond butter.  Dipped in plain yogurt, I got lost in a land of deliciousness and then realized I should probably actually go to work.

jan15 007

On Wednesday, I had some scrambled egg whites + various veggies and a side of GF brown toast + blueberry honey.

jan15 021

jan15 020

No no, I didn’t eat the whole jar.  I wanted to, though.  It doesn’t taste strongly of blueberries, it just has a really subtle hint of them.  I forgot how good simple toast and honey with a cup of tea can taste.  Thank you Santa for more farmer’s market honey!

I want to be an old grandma one day who only eats honey toast + tea.

Thursday I ate an egg sandwich on the bus.  I do not recommend this.  I had work-related stuff to go to in Gatineau (Quebec) and it was a long commute.  I had to leave too early to make something decent.  Bleh.

This morning, more office oats.  It’s sad.

Lunches?  Packed.  Pretty standard fare.  Lots of vegetables, a couple sandwiches, some leftovers.

Dinners were more interesting.

jan15 002

I reheated some GF, dairy free mac + “cheese” in the oven and added a side of steamed beets.  The mac wasn’t bad, considering it’s been in the freezer for… a couple months.

Someone, please, help.  I don’t like beets and I think it’s because I have no good recipes for them.  If my Farmer Friend shows up with more beets in my next delivery basket, I’ll save them to throw at the squirrels in the summer, rather than eat them.  Anyone have an easy recipe idea?

Knock knock!  Who’s there?

jan15 016

The Swiss Chalet delivery man!  Too tired to cook, too tired to do anything but put in an order for a quarter chicken dinner + mashed taters.  My tum felt a bit weird after this – maybe there was wheat in the taters?  I added my own side of mixed veggies.

Maybe I’m just really cheap, but I find it hard to believe that I should have to pay over 12 dollars for a chicken breast and a mashed potato blob.

And yet, it tasted great, and there’s no arguing that.

Winner of Saddest Dinner Ever Posted:

jan15 024

When you come home late and don’t know what to eat (and you already ordered Swiss Chalet the night before), coming up with something decent is hard.  I just didn’t bother trying.

Supper was steamed sweet potato + quinoa (with touch of sesame oil) + edamame.  At least I know it had a lot of protein, thanks to the grain and the awesome green guys.

Thursday night I went for Vietnamese and it hit the spot!  Yum.

Tonight, I met up with Martha and my Everyday Food magazine to make this:

jan15 036

A Quick Chickpea Curry.  Martha Stewart can be a scary lady, so I won’t post her recipe on here, but if you browse her food website in the near future, you might find it someday soon!

I piled it on top of basmati rice and topped it with cilantro + plain yogurt.

jan15 031

Fantastic!  I have leftovers, which as you know, is a big bonus.

I Move

Okay, let’s see if I can remember…

Mondaystrength training at the gym, mostly biceps + core.  I warmed up with 10 minutes on the treadmill to break a sweat.  I haven’t done bicep curls in ages and my arms felt great after.

Tuesday – pretty much a rest day, but I did squeeze in a half hour walk back from the office.

Wednesdayhot yoga.  Very, very hot.  Hotter than usual, I think.  Regardless, sweating out the last three days of work felt good.

Thursday – a true rest day.

Friday – back to the gym before work for some treadmill time.  About 40 minutes, a mix of walking and running, to start the day.  For about the first twenty minutes of cardio I feel sluggish and sore, but then all of a sudden, my body gets into it and I have no problems.  That first part is always the hardest.

I have a great weekend ahead, and hope you do too!  Enjoy it, whatever you’re doing, and whoever you’re spending it with.

Peace Out, ‘09

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Floors to sweep.

Bathrooms to clean.

Carpet to vacuum.

And of course, food to prep.

It’s New Years Eve, my friends, and I’m having a party!  I’m not a huge New Years celebrator, but it’s an excuse to get friends together to eat, drink and be merry – and play some sweet board games.  The trash talking has commenced and I’m ready to play dirty.

So yes, I’m back in Ottawa after a great Christmas at home which involved way too much eating, among other things.  My mom’s mission is to make me gain five pounds every time I visit.  Mom – success!  The pants are a little snuggly and I’ve been feeling blah, so getting back into regular routine is going to be good.

I Eat

Once again, just some of the main course meals.  Snacks in between were abundant.  Plentiful.  Gluttonous.  Oh-so-Christmasey.

Breakfasts were mostly oatmeal.

dec31 002

This was post-turkey dinner so I had some SF cranberry sauce on top, along with blackberries + slivered almonds + peanut butter.

dec31 012

A fall themed breakfast followed, which makes perfect sense when it’s snowing and wintery outside… right.

I drowned my bowl of pumpkin oats with SF GF maple syrup and added a crumbled GF SF pumpkin muffin + blackberries + plain yogurt.  I don’t think I like crumbled muffins on oats.  It feels like a waste of baking when it’s smooshes up in your mouth like oatmeal does.

Muffins are now reserved for eating au natural and will only be put on oats when toppings are extremely limited.

Before work yesterday, I wanted an egg sandwich, so I had one, with a bit of bacon inside.

dec31 023

I went out for a sushi lunch with my sisters and wow, was it ever good.  We checked out a place in Cambridge (Ontario) called Sushi California.

dec31 009

dec31 010

dec31 007

This was a dynamite roll + spicy salmon + rainbow roll.

dec31 006

The middle plate had yam roll + avocado/cucumber roll + California roll.  The far right had a red dragon roll + Hawaiian roll.  The miso soup was on the house!

I would say we out did ourselves.  I would also say, well done girls!  We ate just about all of this and we all liked it.

Two open-faced sandwiches with turkey + salami appeared the next day for lunch.

dec31 017

Yesterday’s supper tasted fresh and delicious, thanks for my timely delivery of my organic produce from Bryson Farms and leftover apricot glazed chicken from mom.

dec31 026

I baked squash (400F for about forty minutes) and had a side salad of mixed greens.  Yummy in my tummy.

And dessert, oh dessert, was banana soft serve.  Nothing says a cozy winter evening like a bowl of freezing cold ripe banana.

dec31 032

Oh yes, I so did!  Topped with carob chips + almond butter + sliced almonds and I almost died after the first bite, right then and there.

Where are all the rest of the meals?  Awkward flight times and other busyness left me eating snacks and I didn’t have as many “normal” eats.

I Move

I had been doing so well, but…

Monday – nothing!

Tuesday – a nice doggy walk.  Unfortunately, it turned into me carrying Syd (not the chihuahua) down a long street because the salt on the sidewalks hurt her feet.  She’s a heavy girl!  I think that counts for strength training, right? ;)

This is her on the right – try to ignore how Lola’s eyes look like they’re about to pop out:

Cait's Cottage Pics 112

Wednesday – nothing!   I was exhausted yesterday after little sleep and being back in the office.

Thursday – okay, let’s get back on track.  I hit the gym at 6 this morning and did a 30 minutes treadie workout followed by 10 minutes on the bike.  The sweat was rolling, tunes were pumping, and I felt great.

I am amazed at how much working out affects my mood.  I’ve had some stuff on my mind lately, and it seems to bother me more when I fall out of my exercise routine.  Today, back in the saddle, my head felt clearer and things seemed to feel less significant.  I like that much better!  Any one else feel this way, too?

Alright, I’m off to get ready for a fun night.  Thanks for stopping by the blog – I hope your New Years Eve is a great one!  And if a difference in time means you’ve already celebrated, I hope it was great!

See you in 2010,

Adi

Santa Shuffled

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

Woohoo, I did a 5k race!

I can finally say I’ve done one.  I can’t believe it.  I was surrounded by hundreds (?) of runners, many of whom wore Santa hats and reindeer ears, some in Christmas pyjamas, others dressed as elves, all out on a Saturday morning to run for fun.  The atmosphere was so positive, Christmas music was blasting, kids and dogs were running loose.

I think I came in around 29 minutes, but I’m not totally sure.  It took me awhile to actually get up to the start line once the race began (I started way at the back of the pack) and then could not get around a motorcade of baby strollers.  At the beginning, I had to walk for a bit before people started spreading out.

But my goal was accomplished: to run a race and enjoy it.  Check and check.  I’m so glad I did it – thanks for the encouragement!

I Eat

In order to Santa shuffle, warm oats are a required breakfast.

dec5 044

This was 1/2 c. oats + 1/2 c. almond milk + 1/2 c. water + 1/2 nan + cinnamon + pumpkin seeds + raisins + flax seeds + peanut butter + running excitement.

dec5 050

Other breakfasts in the last couple of days…

dec5 035

Totally a TGIF breakfast.  Some GF toast + egg + bacon + tom + cheese slivers.  Not sure my tummy was digging le fromage, but the rest tasted great.  I had some grapefruit too.

dec5 039

I had zucchini in the fridge and was craving zucchini batter oats so, naturally, I made some.

dec5 003

The usual oats, but added 1/2 grated zucchini and topped it with cacao nibs + slivered almonds + peanut butter and stirred in some raisins.

dec5 006

And this bowl was utterly forgettable.

dec5 022

That wraps up breakfasts.  Lunches have been at work but today’s lunch is definitely photo worthy.  Unfortunately, my camera cord is far away from me and I don’t want to go get it.  I’ll post it next time – but to prevent you from dying of suspense, it was rice pasta + chicken + zucchini + green pepper + ginger + evoo + balsamic vinegar + fresh parsley.

Isn’t comfort food, um, comforting?  I wanted some the other night so I settled on mashed taters and filled my plate up with way too much other good stuff.

dec5 029

dec5 023

dec5 027

Roasted chicken + roasted brussell sprouts + mixed frozen veggies + mashed taters with parsley.

And surprise!  I ate the exact same thing last night.

I Move

Wednesday – nothing serious, just walked to and from the office.  I was too busy socializing with a friend to exercise. :)

Thursday – I got home, put on my track pants with elasticized ankles loungewear and plopped myself on my bed.  Was I going to work out?  Nooo way, Hosea.  Then, I started watching LL Cool J videos on Youtube and felt like going for a run.  What?!  Motivation comes from weird places.  I changed into running clothes and went for a short, brisk nighttime jog.  Afterwards, I felt great.

Friday – Does walking to do 100 errands count?  I went to pick up my race kit and on the walk there, watched a car accident happen.  I did my civic duty and made sure everyone was okay – they were – and continued on my way.  After I got my stuff, I bought a foam roller.  Anyone tried using one of those torture tubes?  I came home and did these exercises and they hurt, but my legs felt awesome after.  I’m pretty sure it costs 50 cents to manufacture one of those things and I coughed up 30 bucks.  Trying not to think about it… trying not to think about it…

Saturday – Ran with other people for the first time in my 24 years of living.  Well, unless you count my old track days.  I was a sprinter and not a long distance runner, which wasn’t really conducive to chatting with people while moving.  Give me a baton and tell me to run 100 metres and I’ll run hard for a short time and have no problems, but tell me to ease up and run for half an hour?  Now that I have a problem with.  One of these days it will start to feel easier.  Maybe.

Off to make a new recipe for dinner and then bowling with friends.   Goooo bowling!

Spitty

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Have you ever tried to do something, hoping you can pull it off and make it look natural, but it doesn’t end up going as planned?

I was heading out on a run and I could feel a fuzzy thing in my mouth.  I will spit it out on the grass beside me and look all business, shooting spit as I gear up to go.

The plan backfired.

I spit all over my leg.

That never looks cool, and sure doesn’t look natural.

Note to self: don’t try to be a spitter when you’re not.

I Eat

One thing I can do is make oats that fill up a tummy.

Check out my new Christmas bowl!  My mom sent this to me for my birthday.  Who knew La Senza has moved into the dish market?

nov 29 002

nov 29 009

Toppings on this oat bran were all over the place: t-mix + bluebs + raspberries + peanut butter.

Not to be out done, the next day’s oat bran took toppings to a whole new level.

nov 29 018

Pom seeds + pumpkin seeds + bluebs + cacao nibs + peanut butter.

It would appear that the butter trumped all other oat toppers.

nov 29 016

That’s a big blob.

And Saturday’s oats, double the fun.  A friend came over for brekkie so I doubled the usual ingredients for oats: 1 c. oats + 1 c. almond milk + 1 c. water + 1 whole nan.

Friend’s bowl:

nov 29 036

My lame bowl:

nov 29 035

Today’s bowl of oats was in the American Thanksgiving spirit.  Lots of the American food blogs have been loaded with pictures of delicious food lately, so I decided to make an impromptu sugar-free cranberry sauce yesterday with leftover berries from an apple/cranberry/pecan crisp I brought to a friend’s last night for dinner.  Well, the crisp wasn’t dinner.

But imagine if that was an appropriate main course!  Half the world’s problems would be solved if we all ate apple crisp as an entree on a regular basis.

nov 29 054

Simple toppings, just cranberry sauce + slivered almonds + peanut butter.

nov 29 057

How to make a small amount of the sauce?

  • Boil 1/2 c. water + 1/3 c. Splenda until it’s bubbling.
  • Add about 1/2 a small package fresh cranberries and let the mixture come back to a boil.
  • Reduce heat, and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.
  • Take it off the heat, let it cool, and store it in the fridge.

Only one lunch to post – other lunches have been at work and today I was at East Side Mario’s for an impromptu lunch with some church peeps, and found myself cameraless.  How exciting is a chunk of chicken to look at, anyway?

Yesterday’s lunch needed some rah-rah.  I found that excitement in an ancient butternut squash in our potato drawer.  Really, I can’t even remember when I bought the thing, and I like to think my memory is decent.

So that’s scary.

I roasted it with some extra virgin olive oil + cinnamon and thought it tasted A-okay.  I still have all ten fingers.

nov 29 046

On top of some spinach + green onions and sprinkled with pom seeds + balsamic vinegar and a bit of S n’ P

nov 29 044

And a side of GF toast + laughing cow fromage.

nov 29 050

Suppers?  Mostly MIA.

nov 29 019

Salmon salad + GF bread + baby spinach + tom slices.

nov 29 025

And green beans because they were seeing their final days.

One another dinner was a pathetic Sandwich Supper with yellow-tinged photographs.

Yellow-tinged photographs look like they should smell weird.  Do you know what I mean?  They’ve been vetoed.

Last night’s dinner was a great meal at a friend’s place.  In addition to delicious gluten-free food, the company was entertaining and I might have had too much fun. :) Getting up early this morning was painful.  Good thing I could hear the oats calling from the kitchen.

Now, here’s a sample of the highlight from the last few days:

nov 29 027

A friend baked me sugar-free, GF brownies and they.  are.  divine.

Umm, they were divine.  I ploughed through half a large pan in two days.  Am I embarrassed?  No, because if you tasted them and hadn’t eaten a brownie in over a year, I’m sure you would have done that too!  Unless you have self control, which I clearly don’t have, but that’s for another post.  So, so delish.

nov 29 028

nov 29 031

It makes me sad to look at those pictures and know they are gone.  The good news?  My friend had brownie mix left over so I not only got plenty of brownies, I have the mix to make more!

Dangerous.

I Move

Thursday – off to see Jim after work.  I did 10 minutes on the bike to warm up and then headed to the free weights for an unenergetic twenty minutes.  What a lazy workout!  I was annoyed with myself for not putting in any effort.  So, I walked home from the gym.  It was a mild night, so nice for November, and I had my home church that evening.  Solution to a sad workout?  Make up for it later!  After walking back from the gym and eating a quick supper, I pumped up my tires and biked the few kilometres to and from home church.  It felt awesome and even though it started raining on my way back, I think I was smiling the whole way … I’ve been missing my bike!  Exercise intention fulfilled.

Friday – a good run on the treadie.  Heading to the gym right after work on Fridays can be tough, but it’s always a choice I’m glad I made.  It gets the weekend started right!

Saturday – I jogged a short 2 km to the office gym (I think I need to go back to see my other Jim for a change…) and did some core + chest weight training.  It was focused and logical movement – and left me hurting the next morning, in a good way.  I jogged back home

Sunday – I hadn’t planned on doing anything today because I am tired.  All of a sudden, I just felt like going outside and doing a short run.  Why?  I don’t know, I don’t question these things, I just go with it.  I had a snacky, munchy afternoon and it’s easy for me to reign that in if I go work out.  Also cool?  It was my first evening run in a really long time and I got to see Christmas lights in the neighbourhood.  It was nice.

I was also chased by a dog the size of my foot named Champagne.  He (she?) tried to bite my ankles and I almost clomped on its little paws.  Its owners were chasing her down the road.  Oh Champagne, bad little puppy.

Time to find something to eat for supper… maybe I’ll just have something snacky…

Have a great week!

Bitter ‘bout Twitter

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

I go to a somewhat unconventional church.  We’re in the midst of a series on narcissism (which happens to be the hardest word to type) and this morning, the focus was on technology.  And yes, it’s in church that I watched this awesome video clip on why Twitter is, well, a little bit messed up:

But rather than point my finger at Twitterers, I can’t ignore the finger pointing back at myself for blogging.  I mean, come on, I have a website where I post pictures about what I eat and my exercise habits and whatever else I feel like writing.  Isn’t that a bit ego-centric?  Do I really think people care about my bowl of oatmeal?

Well, not really.

Blogs are fascinating.  I took an entertainment studies course during my graduate degree and at that point, I didn’t know much about blogs.  I thought people who wrote them either, a) had really intriguing lives, or b) were incredibly self-centred… okay, or c) a combination of both.

So where am I on the spectrum?  Hard to say.  It’s quite obvious my life is far from intriguing (but believe me, I wouldn’t change it!  Being content is a beautiful thing!) and I like to hope that I’m not just that into me.  Does blogging fill some sort of void?  Sure – it fills the writing gap in my life.

Anyway, I don’t have answers to questions and don’t really know why I blog, and I can’t assume I know why others do either, but one thing I did walk away with this morning was this paragraph from the teaching notes:

A realistic view of self allows our ego to relax.  When we see how valuable and yet how broken we are, we are freed from two destructive habits: a) the habitual pursuit of value through constant self-promotion and self-affirmation and, b) the habitual hiding of our failure from others as though brokenness and failure would be a shameful shock.

Just some food for thought.

Food for my mouth is another thing altogether.

I Eat

nov 15 006

Talk about a Thursday shake up.  That was an egg + bacon sammy and some orange hunks.  The sandwich hat was a bit shrunken thanks to using the bread bum.  I missed the extra inch of carbs.

nov 15 030

nov 15 028

Back to basics on Friday morning with an oatmeal breakie.  The standard 1/2 c. oats + 1/2 c. almond milk + 1/2 c. water + 1/2 nan + cinnamon + flax seeds + pumpkin seeds + almonds + pumpkin seed butter knocked my socks off.

Okay, my slippers.  I wasn’t wearing socks.

nov 15 032

I have no pictures of Saturday’s breakfast – but I do have pictures of my table.  Oh hooray!

nov 15 051

nov 15 042

These are some good looking buns.

nov 15 044

Couldn’t tell you how tasty they were because the sugar + wheat would have put my brunch with friends to an abrupt end.  It was great to get together with some friends I don’t see too often.  Brunch also trumps dinner any day because it’s so much more casual – and breakfast food is the best food of all!

I made an egg casserole and have some left over so it will make a blog appearance soon.  The rest of the eats were yogurt + grapefruits + Montreal bagels and lots of beverages.  It was delicious – and a good time.

Today’s breakfast was Nature’s Path GF waffles + plain yogurt + 1/2 nan + sugar free strawberry jam + cinnamon + alien brains.  So good, eaten so fast.  Sad.

nov 15 067

nov 15 061

Work lunches continue to remain unphotographed because they continue to remain boring.  … and I just can’t be bothered to take pictures of copious amounts of Tupperware.

Saturday’s lunch was pretty much brunch, but today’s lunch sent me straight to sandwich heaven.

nov 15 070

Homemade GF bread + smoked ham + romaine + red onion + toms + mustard + 1/2 avocado + S n’ P = ?

It equals a party in my mouth.

It also equals food all over my pants.  This was a drippy sandwich and I was uncivilized and ate on the couch.

Suppers have been uninspired – even with the arrival of Martha at my house.  I love you Everyday Food.

nov 15 057

nov 15 059

When I don’t know what to make, I just think protein + starchy yum + veggies.

That translated into tuna + rice pasta + broccs and mushrooms.

I added extra virgin olive oil + balsamic vinegar + sea salt as a dressing and pleasantly surprised myself with something edible and tasty.  Ahh, love a good surprise.

Other suppers were fast and furious – both cooking and eating wise.

 nov 15 017

This was the leftover cauliflower + chickpea curry with brown rice.

nov 15 035

Some basmati rice with frozen asian veggies + shrimpers + soy sauce + chilli flakes.  Sadly, I was pulling the tails off these guys and found one shrimp still had his last supper inside him.  Um, ick.

Normally, dessert is fruit or a strange gluten free and sugar free `treat“.  I decided to be creative the other day and made a mini apple crisp.

nov 15 018

I sliced up an apple, added a small handful of quick oats + cinnamon + pecans and a touch of water + Splenda and put it in the microwave for about 2 minutes.  The result?  A dessert that didn’t end in tummy trauma and tasted good.  Winner!

Not sure what tonight’s supper will be, but I’m thinking it will take no more than ten minutes to make because I’m lazy.

I Move

Thursday – just walking to and from the office.  My evening was full from the time I got off work until the time I went to bed.  Walking is good for you though, yes? :)

Friday – hit the treadie.  I realized the office gym is a bit, hmm, cult-like.  There’s some weird stuff that goes on there.  The fact that it’s a basement dungeon doesn’t help its cause, either.  It was a great run though!

Saturday – back to my favourite Jim that is not underground.  I did the elliptical and then about half an hour of upper back +  lower back weights.  I walked out of there feeling awesome.  If you’re ever stuck for motivation to get yourself to work out, ask yourself the million dollar question: Have I ever finished working out and wished I never did that?

Sunday – I’m soon going to roll out my yoga mat and stretch for a bit.  Starting out the week like Gumby can only bring good things.

Did you have a good weekend?  Sure hope you did – but enjoy what little bit is left!

Au revoir, friends.

Adi

PS – I put up a new page on Oatonomy lingo so you don’t think I’m dating a guy named Jim.
