I <3 You, Oats

Friday, October 9th, 2009

If I could marry a bowl of oatmeal, I surely would.

Since that’s not possible – and weird – I’ll have to stick with eating it every morning and taking pictures of the little big bowls of love.

So without further ado…

I Eat

oct5 002

oct5 006

A yummy bowl of 1/2 c. oats + 1/2 c. almond milk + 1/2 c. water + 1/2 nan + cinnamon + granola + soy nuts + almond butter.

oct 8 001

I probably should have some oatmeal with my nut butter.  What a happy morning that was.

 oct 8 021

As was the morning of this bowl – mostly because of the single dried apple slice.  It totally made the bowl.

oct 8 030

Now that was a party in my mouth.  I cut out the nan and replaced it with half a pear, and split it up between the cooking and topping process.  Yes, process.

This bowl was insanely delicious for a Thursday.

Other eats weren’t as delicious as my oats (is anything ever?) but I guess they can still make an appearance.

oct5 012

oct5 016

I don’t really remember what was in this… veggies of some sort + pork tenderloin + rice spaghetti noodles.  The sauce was soy sauce + red wine vinegar + corn starch.  Chopsticks were totally necessary to prevent me from burning my mouth – look at the steam!

oct 8 015

This was some boring leftovers from the weekend.  Chicken thighs are really not great – I know I’ve whined about this before.  By the time you pick off the skin and all the fatty blobs, what’s left?  A bone and three grams of meat.  How is that dinner?

Just in case you thought I was joking when I said I can eat my weight in sushi, here’s some evidence from last night:

oct 8 022

Free sushi!!

No, it wasn’t.  But the zero dollars makes it look that way!  All-you-can-eat with a friend – excellent.  And we did split that, I promise it wasn’t just me.  But it mostly was.  And it was fully delicious.

oct 8 031

Tonight’s supper was eaten quick!  I think egg sandwiches are a favourite supper.  That’s probably because they’re meant for breakfast.  Any other egg sandwich lovers out there?

oct 8 037

They’re even better with stray broccoli bits stuck to them… ?!

Now let’s look at desserts.  They’ve been making countless appearances lately.

oct 8 041

Cantaloupe + banana nut granola (!!) + dates + cacao nib cookie.  Oops, and where did the other one(s) go that I ate?  Strange.

oct 8 053

But how about this, friends?  A lovely bowl of banana soft serve + banana nut granola + cacao nibs.

oct5 017

Great.  There’s drool all over my keyboard now.

oct5 022

Getting a little photo crazy with this one.

oct5 025

The close up of the yum:

oct5 028

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!  Good stuff.

I Move

Monday – after work, I got on the bus to go across town to run on the treadmill at the gym for half an hour.

Tuesday – after work, I walked across the street to go on the elliptical at the gym for about twenty minutes, and did some random free weights.

… across the street?  Yes!  I am now the owner of a gym membership at my office.  I just have to dodge four lanes of speeding traffic and I’m there!  It’s a bit of a smelly basement cavern but it’s dirt cheap, convenient and saves me an extra trip to the other gym.

Tuesday, encorefootball at work.  You read that right.  I played football, against my will, over the lunch hour.  I was recruited and didn’t have the backbone to refuse.  I got some mud smears on my pants and my shoes have authentic grass stains now, so I confess, I felt almost legit afterward.  But I’m never playing again.

Wednesday – I increased the flexibility of my fingers by using chopsticks.

Thursday – back to the office gym for a treadmill run.  Not sure where the energy came from at the end of the day, but it was a great work out and I was in a good mood.

Turkey Time

Heading home tomorrow night for Thanksgiving.  Wahoo!  To all you Canadians enjoying the holiday, I hope you have a great weekend and that you get some yummy food under your belt (which will likely need to be loosened by Monday night).  Next post will be from home.

It’s Hawt

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

You know those days that absolutely fly by?  The kind when you look at the clock and can’t believe three hours just disappeared?

Today wasn’t one of those days.  It dragged so very slowly.  I entertained myself with eating.  This is probably the first day in about five months that I’ve felt that though, so I guess it’s about time.

Unlike my work day, my run this morning went by pretty quick.  I like sleeping in on Wednesdays but I slept well and my alarm went off and I was ready to go!  But of course, a snack was needed.

aug12 005

This was before half nan + almond butter construction.

I ran about 6 and a quarter kilometres and felt pretty good.  The weather was beautiful.  The sun was just coming up and it looked like a giant fireball – a sign of a hot day to come.

A smoothie was in order after my walk to work.  Here it is, pre-blending.  I’m all about the before shots today.

aug12 007

1 c. unsweetened chocolate almond milk + 1/2 c. frozen berries + 1/4 c. raw oats + 1/2 scoop Amazing Grass.

So today’s entertainment was:

Last night’s leftovers were the highlight, hands down.  I also dug half a Clif bar out of my purse.  Like I said, boring day.  Eating out of boredom was in full force.  Plus, Clifs are delish.

I walked home in 35+ weather (yeah!!) and then sat by the pool.  Tihs is why working out in the morning is awesome – the rest of the day is yours to do whatever you want, including pool lounging.

Cooking wasn’t happening and I didn’t want to stand in front of the bbq.  A cold salad sounded perfect.

aug12 012

Lots of tom chunks + cukes + avocado + sprouts + red onion + lemon juice + sea salt + pepper + basil.

And a side of blue corn chips + salsa.

aug12 014

aug12 017

Ready in – ten minutes.  Eaten in – less than five.  Scary.

aug12 011

And then it was banana soft serve time!  Topped with some raspberry jam… what could be better?

aug12 019

And then I had some granola blobs – but if I’m going to be honest, I should probably admit that there were about 1000 handfuls that looked like this.

aug12 022

There’s an addictive substance in these.  My first guess is the peanut butter.

Tomorrow is a big day!  I have a consultation with a specialist about my tummy turbulence.  It’s just a preliminary meeting so I know nothing much will come of this first visit, but hopefully I’ll have a different type of test ordered which can lead to some answers.  My tummy is tired, and I’m tired of my tummy.  Maybe tomorrow is the beginning of the end!

A girl can dream. ;)

Off to make some tea, read blogs, watch bad television, make my lunch… the usual evening stuff.  … and that likely includes another snack. :)

Seven Ate Nine

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

Guess what today is?! Seven Ate Nine Day!

Yep, 07/08/09.

Do you know that joke, where the punch line is “… because 7 ate 9”?  I think it’s about numbers going to a party, and 9 doesn’t show up because 7 got hungry… something like that.  Jokes aren’t as good when you remember the punch line and nothing else.

Originally, I wanted to call this blog “Seven Ate Nine” but Oatonomy was the winner in the end.  But, in honour of Seven Ate Nine Day, I did lots of eight-ing.

I was up and out the door just after 5:30am this morning.  I snacked on this guy before I left…

july8 005

I am loving the morning workouts.  I biked to the gym and was out of breath by the time I got there.  I did a quick 13 minutes on the treadie and 15 minutes of upper body lifting.  It felt awesome to throw the weights around again!  Then, back on the bike to get home and get ready for work.  All in all, almost 440 calories burned and a happy heart from all that huffin’ n’ puffin’.

Breakfast in a bag was on the menu today.  In a bag, I put 1/2 c. of oats + cinnamon + handful blueberries.  When I got to work, I added 1/2 c. of water and nuked it for a couple minutes.  I added t-mix on top, too.

july8 010

These oats were way better than they normally are in the microwave!  Not sure why, but the consistency wasn’t as gummy and blek as usual.  I was loving the oats today, partly because I was freezing in the office.

Then I got some awesome news!  The job stress has now been eliminated!  All is well, and I am one thankful, thankful girl.  To celebrate, my boss treated me to thai for lunch.  We went to Sala Thai – one of those places you’d never go into unless someone told you it was good.

I got the lunch portion of “Pad Khing” – rice and pork with ginger and red and green peppers.  Mushroom soup came with it too and it was great.  Happy tummies all around.

A pomme was my afternoon snack, along with some baby carrots.

july7 022

july7 020

I ate a lot more carrots + hummus + t-mix between getting home and making supper.  Oh yeah, and I had some peanut butter + honey cakeage.

july8 011

Supper was lunch!  It was a little soggy by the time I ate it, but oh well, it was easy.

july8 016

Baby spinach + hardboiled egg + strawbs + sunflower seeds + balsamic vinegar was added after.

I had a side of buttered toasted rice bread. It was the best part of supper.

july8 013

Dessert?  You guessed it.

july8 018

Mmmm.

july8 022

I caught up with a friend at Starbucks tonight and then came home and did some snacking while I packed my lunch for tomorrow.  It’s a sleep-in day… exercise won’t be until tomorrow night because I have rowing.  Should be nice weather here, too.

Hope you had a great, fantastic, full of simple healthiness, Seven Ate Nine Day!

It Rumbles, She Grumbles

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

I want to take my stomach, put it in a box, tie it with a bow and give it to someone I don’t like.  Today is a stomach-hating day.  We’ve been fighting for the entire day and quite frankly, I’m perturbed.

Now that we’ve established I’m in a bad mood, let’s start at the very beginning.  A lady who frolics in vast meadows once said that’s a very good place to start.  I think it was her, anyway.

I was out the door at 5:45 this morning for a 6.5 km run.  It was great – except I almost saw a falcon eat baby ducklings.  I did a quick scan of the path for giant rocks I could hurl at the beast, but found nothing.  The babies got away and all was well – no injuries.

I fuelled up with this nan, sans peel.

july6 013

Once I got to work, I drank a sea monkey smoothie.

july6 015

Half a frozen nan + half frozen mango + 3/4 c. water + 1/4 c. plain non-fat yogurt + 1 scoop Amazing Grass.  This thing kept me going for quite awhile!  I was actually surprised how full I stayed.

Lunch was overnight oats.  I know, I know, kind of sad and yet… one of the best lunches I’ve had in awhile!  I still prefer oats at breakfast but when you don’t feel like thinking when packing your lunch, oats always work.

july6 002

Overnight in the fridge I put 1/2 c. oats + 1/2 c. plain non-fat yogurt + handful blueberries, blackberries + cinnamon + agave syrup.  I added 1/4 c. almond milk after this photo, the next morning.

And I had some baby carrots + an egg in the afternoon.

july6 008

july6 003

After a zooey day at work I snacked on this Nuts Over Chocolate Luna bar and experienced heaven for the 3 minutes it took me to eat this thing.  Very, very good.

july6 021

And I ate a whole whack of carrots + cherry tomatoes + t-mix.

Supper was random.  I thawed out a hunk of pork tenderloin I had bbq’d ages ago and sautéed some zucchini and mixed frozen veggies, tossing in some sesame oil + ginger.  With rice pasta + spinach, I give this supper two thumbs and one index finger up.

july6 024

july6 028

Dessert – fruit with a blob of yo-ghurt.

july6 032

july6 030

Later in the evening, my tummy and I battled again and to tame the beast, I had a piece of gf cinnamon raisin toast + tea.

july6 035

july6 036

Tomorrow is going to be a big day for work-related stuff, so I have a couple more things to do and then I’m off to bed.  Here’s to hoping that the next time I post, I’m a much happier girl… for the sake of anyone reading this blog. ;)

Missing Morning Munchies

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

I was not with it this morning.  I was a zombie in the kitchen making a breakfast I wouldn’t normally make, looking for a thermos to take it to work in, and completely forgot to take a picture.

I didn’t even realize it until I uploaded the pictures from my camera.  Yes, I am going to bed early tonight.  Yikes.

I do remember what my breakfast was though, so you can use your imagination! :)  My roommate was away so it was the perfect time to pull out the rocket powered drill blender.

I blended 1/2 c. water + 1/4 c. plain non-fat yogurt + 1/2 frozen nan + 1/2 not frozen nan + 1/2 c. frozen mixed berries + 2 huge handfuls baby spinach + big glob almond butter + 1/4 c. oats.

Fabulous. I walked to work and had put the sludge in a thermos to keep it cold.  I drank it pretty quickly once I got to the office.

The smoothie didn’t keep me full for long though.  I broke out the lunch snacks around 11am.

First, a cherry pie Larabar.

june19 010

The main deal was last night’s stir fry leftovers.  Yummers.

june19 006

Of course, lots of fruit for an afternoon snack.

june19 008

june19 002

For my co-worker’s birthday, one of the women in the office brought in a cake.  It’s a bit awkward turning things like that down – it’s one of those social situations where you feel obligated to eat a piece.  The first assumption is likely “she’s dieting”.  I feel weird explaining the tummy stuff to some colleagues, so I just politely decline food.  It’s not like anyone makes a big deal of it, and I don’t either, but it’s just an awkward office thing.

Anyways… supper was easy and healthy.  I didn’t feel like cooking after walking home in the muggy weather.  Even though it was fast, there was lots of protein on my plate to get me fuelled for the gym.

june19 020

I had two overcooked eggs (you have to squint your eyes to see them on the plate!) + three little pieces of GF toast + mixed greens salad + cucumbers + hummus.

june19 017

june19 013

june19 012

A new salad dressing made an appearance tonight, based on a recipe from Fitness magazine.  I mixed 1 tbsp canola oil + 1 tbsp sesame oil + 2 tbsp lime juice + pinch of sea salt + pinch of ginger.  It was a really good change from the usual balsamic.

For dessert, cantaloupe + plain non-fat yogurt + unsweetened raspberry jam.

june19 021

june19 022

Ohh summer eating.  I miss this the rest of the year!

june19 024

I finally biked to the gym.  It was the first time I’ve biked to the gym since I joined a new one in January.  I biked 15 minutes there for a good warm up and then hopped on the treadie for another 25 minutes.  I kept my heart rate up while I did a 40 minute upper body strength routine + core work in the very empty free weights area.  Dripping with sweat, I got back on my bike to get home.  From when I left my house to when I got back, the heart rate monitor said I smoked 590 calories.  That seems a  bit high to me – but I do feel great.  I love a good sweaty workout to clear my head.  Bring on the weekend!

I showered, blow dried my hair for the first time in – weeks? – and am getting caught up on some blog reading.  Just sipping some water and am soon heading to bed… tomorrow is hopefully going to be a great day.

Happy weekend folks! :)
