Farewell, My Wheat

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

I’m in my track pants and hoodie, plopped on the couch, watching the Food Network.  I mean it when I say it… this is my favourite way to spend a night!  I’m pretty boring, I know.

My day was less than boring – in fact, it was ridiculous.  Lots of work drama today made my Friday go by very fast.  I’m so glad my oats had some sort of magical staying power this morning because they had to last me five hours.  I didn’t get a chance to eat until that much later!

I had a puppy swimming in my hazelnut tea this morning.

This was a delish bowl of oat bran, a half cup serving, with half a banane + almond milk + pecans + raisins + raspberry jam + hazel peanut butter.  Just writing about it makes me want a bowl… :)

Better than my arm

By the time I got to eat lunch today, I was starving.  I wanted to eat my own hand off, but I figured my salad of mixed beans + spinach + tomatoes + cucumber +  parsley + lemon juice + sea salt would taste better.  Plus, I need my hand for work!

This lunch was satisfying.  The best part was the Luna bar, the cranberry flavour one.  I haven’t had this flavour in a long time and I forgot how good it is.  It’s mildly sweet and on the dry side but it`s perfect with tea.

Fresh air

After a hectic day, I wanted to just be still.  Do you ever that feeling?  I walked the 30 minutes home from the office, and then changed into some exercise gear.  I grabbed my knapsack and my water bottle, and headed back in the direction of my office.  Nope, not back to work, but to a near by park.

I snapped some pics as I hiked around.  The weather was nice but there was no one on the path.  I was walking at a quick pace but it was still relaxing.

I got to the top of the gradual incline and sat on a bench for a few minutes, and soaked up this view:

I couldn’t help but think of everything I’m thankful for.  Despite the craziness of my job today, I’m still thankful I have a job – that I generally love.  Mmm fresh air.

Goodbye to my love

This is my last day of wheat.  No more wheat from here on out.  Tomorrow I have blood work and wheat is dead to me!  I had to go out big though… I had to sink my teeth into something wheat-y, gluten-y and yummy as my farewell to wheat meal.

The choice was obvious: a sandwich from Dirienzo’s.  This is a little Italian food place in Ottawa.  They have a couple locations now and there’s one a stone’s throw away from my house.  The place is famous for their sandwiches.  Can you see why?!

This bread was super fresh and somewhat squishy inside, but with a decent crust.  I was going to have the usual turkey sandwich, but when I looked at the sandwich board and saw the turkey + proscuitto option, I jumped on it.  Plus, just saying that makes me feel like Giada from Everyday Italian.

This sandwich was also topped with lettuce + tomatoes + sundried tomatoes + mustard.  Fab-u-lous sandwich.

Accompanying this perfect wheat-wich was my all-time favourite drink, diet root beer, artificial sweetener and all.  This Friday evening has been absolute heaven.

Also on my walk back from the park, I stopped at the grocery store and got fruit.  I knew I would crave something sweet after my sandwich so I bought cantaloupe + watermelon and I dipped it in a bit of plain yogurt.

I bet you didn’t realize cloud nine looked like the picture above! :)

After an hour and a half of walking in the sunshine and a busy day at work, and the usual Friday tiredness, I’m ready to call it a night.  I think I’ll make some tea and do nothing the rest of the night.  I’m anticipating the wheat tummy any moment now.

Tomorrow I’m going for brunch with a friend and have a to-do list a mile long!  I love the weekend.

Have a great Friday night,

Adi

Another Day, Another Dollar

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

Day 2 at work was great – getting out of bed this morning was the hardest part.  I felt like I had a 20 minute nap, not seven hours of sleep.  I’m going to bed early tonight.

Thinking of a big bowl of somethin’ got me out of bed though.

all day eats 007

It was an oat bran kind of morning: 1/3c. oat bran, 1 unsweetened strawberry applesauce container and 2/3c. water.  A PB+J sandwich inspired the toppings with bananas for good measure.all day eats 008

That’s one tasty looking oatmeal landscape! :)

Orange Pekoe Tea counts for my caffeine kick today.

My lunch, of course, can be seen in yesterday’s post – pre packing makes for weird photo ops!  It was one yummy salad though.  And the Luna bar?  So, so good.  I ended up having a Fresca at work mid-afternoon.

Supper was very un-photogenic.

I had an Amy’s dairy-free burrito.  Those things are fantastic!  Especially when you don’t feel like cooking.  It met some steamed broccoli on my plate with a bit of salsa. (Not sure what’s up with the blue-tinged pictures…)

I munched on some grapes after work but they were in my mouth so quick I couldn’t capture them on camera. :)

What’s for lunch tomorrow?

Humpday requires a tasty lunch (okay, everyday requires a tasty lunch, but even more so on humpday).

A spinach salad with chickpeas, red pepper, nectarine slices and raisins (balsamic vinegar is packed too).

lunch 002

If a bird flew over tomorrow’s lunch, he’d see my apple like this:

And almonds and my favourite rock climber for other snacks (half the Clif was eaten at some other time I can’t remember)…

Group shot :)

I had hoped to do an at-home workout this evening but time didn’t allow for it, nor did my tired self.  I ended up having a meeting after supper so it didn’t happen tonight.  I’m so tired now though that it’s probably better I rest.  Don’t worry, the at-home workout stuff will be posted in the near future.

Tomorrow, back to the gym!  I’m looking forward to a good workout.

Have a lovely Wednesday!

She Works Hard for the Money

First day of work – done!

The people are great and I’m looking forward to the work tasks I’ll have.  My desk space is huge, too.  I left work thinking, “yep, I can get used to this.”  I love being in the working world.  Love it.

So how did I start my first day as a working girl?  With oatmeal!

all day 010

I did the Half/Half/Half combo because I wasn’t sure when I’d be able to have a snack (I ate breakfast at 7:45am and didn’t get to lunch until 1pm.  My stomach was grumbling).  Oatmeal was the usual base (except for portion size) with trail mix, almond butter and blackberries.

I’ve finally finished off the berries so no more of those on oatmeal.  I’m glad – they were boring me.

And a Tetley White Raspberry tea.

Where’s lunch?

Check out last night’s post to see my packed lunch.  I’ll always post that the night before.  The chicken spinach strawberry salad was so, so yummy.

Okay, what about supper?

Mmm, more eggs.  :)

all day 013

My boyfriend made me an egg sandwich – and it was exactly delish!  I had about one egg on toasted gluten free rice bread (blehhh) with spinach and a tomato.

all day 014

And carrots & cukes.  And tea (I only had a blurry picture… so envision a mug).

all day 012

Foreshadowing…

I had my home church group tonight (where I ate lots of grapes and a hard boiled egg with a fancy yolk!) and came home and packed my lunch for tomorrow.  Here’s what I’ll be dining on during day 2 of my job…

A spinach salad with curried tuna + strawberries + balsamic vinegar.

all day 020

A peach imposter – a nectarine.

all day 024

Of course, more carrots & cukes.

all day 028

A lovely Luna bar.  I love the lemon flavour of these things.  I know lots of you think they’re a bit weird tasting, but I love them with tea.

all day 023

Now I’m really tired and ready for bed.  I still haven’t adjusted to this time change.  I’ll be back tomorrow night with a recap of my eats and some suggestions for an at-home workout (I hope!).

Night,
Adi

Cue Real Life

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

I spent the afternoon editing and formatting a report.  Formatting always takes longer than I anticipate.  In the midst of that, I received a bunch of frustrating emails I needed to respond to, and then my stomach was growling.

Because I was kind of annoyed about the report, not to mention the emails, I don’t really remember how yummy my snack was.  Is that an excuse to meet up with Clif again today?  Probably not…  oh well, my half a Clif bar, juicy pear and dried fruit was a decent enough snack break!  And of course, Tettles made his usual afternoon appearance.

I did get some good news today though!

I’m starting my new job on Monday!

Some paperwork was taking awhile to go through, so I’ve been anxiously waiting to start the job.  I’ve been finished my masters degree for almost a month, and although the time off has been good, I love the professional working world and I’ve been antsy about starting "real life".  Being a student has its perks but I have had enough school to last me… well… a life time.

Starting a full-time office job and will be a huge adjustment in a few ways:

  1. I need to figure out a new exercise schedule
  2. finding a balance between work/friends/fitness/fun stuff/everyday responsibilities will be important
  3. back to packing a lunch everyday!
  4. planning groceries and food ahead of time will be a must for me - otherwise, I’ll be eating soup every night

Should be fun figuring that stuff out, right? :)
