Confessions Of A Food & Fitness Blogger
- I wear cotton when I work out. I know, it’s terrible. I am slowly phasing it out of the fitness wardrobe! Dry-wick is definitely the way to go but I’m having a hard time parting with a grungy old t-shirt that says I ran up the CN Tower… many, many years ago.
- I hate drinking water. No, I despise drinking water with every bone in my body. The only time I want some is if I’m working out or eating salty food. Eight glasses a day? I’m lucky if I drink 8 in a week! Granted, I drink a lot of tea and much of it is herbal. Is water an acquired taste?
- I love the white stuff. Lots of food and health bloggers go on and on about the dangers of artificial sweeteners and how they wouldn’t dare add such poison to their food. Uhhh, I do. I do
every day. Sorry, but I need a little sweetness in my life! My tettles tea wouldn’t be the same without a little packet of powdered joy. I have cut back considerably on how much of it I consume (there would be a time when 8 packs would easily be thrown back in a day) and the most I have now are 2 packets, so it’s all subjective…
- I’ve never been to a Whole Foods or a Trader’s Joe’s. In
fact, I don’t even know what their big pitches are. I guess I could look them up but the mystery of both those places intrigue me. I know they’re grocery stores and they’re big on healthy and organic stuff but beyond that, I’m clueless. I’m choosing to keep the mystery alive and not google either place. Oooo.
- I’m not into photography. Yep, I take pictures of my food (my older sister likes to remind me how weird this is) but I don’t love taking photos. I’ve had the same camera for years that I’ve barely used until now, because of Oatonomy. I figure a blog would be boring without pictures, right?
- Getting myself to the gym requires a pep talk – every time. I never happily throw on my gym clothes and lace up my sneakers and think “yippee, gym!”. I always have to push myself to go and usually need to remind myself how much better I’ll feel afterward. The gym has been part of my routine for a number of years now and this hasn’t gotten any easier. I doubt it will in the future, but that’s okay. I love it once I’m there – it’s just getting there that’s hard.
- I suffer from exercise guilt. When I skip the gym, or any exercise I was planning to do, I feel guilty. This seems to be pretty common among a lot of the bloggers out there. There’s this feeling of failure, or laziness, or both, when I choose my television show over the treadmill. I end up dwelling on my decision not to work out for far too long. I’m working on this. You know what? Sometimes watching my favourite show or relaxing at home is the break I need to get me prepared to jump back into the workout routine the next day. Life is too short to get caught up on silly things like exercise guilt! Thankfully, our worth isn’t determined by the kilometres we run or the weight we lift. Phewf!
- I don’t photograph everything I eat. I’m a grazer so every time I walk past the fridge, I eat something. A couple berries here, a few baby carrots there, a cracker or two later on. If I took a picture of everything I ate, my camera would have
disintegrated by now and the blog would probably implode. It’s just not realistic to take pictures of every single morsel of food I enjoy – not to mention, I can’t imagine anyone caring about the few peanuts I ate while cooking dinner.
- I don’t set fitness goals. I admire people who set out planned goals they want to accomplish. This, however, has never been something I’ve done. I’ve tried to in the past, but the goals have been driven by the wrong reasons. Fitness for me isn’t about running a long race or benching my own body weight. It’s not about achieving a certain size or dropping X number of pounds. It’s just something I do, something I enjoy, to be moving and staying healthy. I know that goals are a fantastic way for some people to stay motivated, but I find goals frustrate me more than encourage me.
- I love sweating – and I’m proud that I do. I think it’s funny when people feel bad about sweating when they work out, especially girls. How many times have you seen a pictur
e of a sweaty blogger, followed by the statement “sorry I look so gross!” or “sorry I’m so sweaty in this picture!”. Sorry?! For what?! Sweat is awesome! I love sweating because I feel like I’ve earned it. At work, I don’t sit at my desk and sweat – I have to make a serious effort to break a sweat during my day, and that means making the effort to exercise. I’m proud that I sweat like a pig! The feeling of sweat rolling down my face, dripping on a machine while music is pumping can’t be matched. Any girls out there reading this, be proud of your hard work! Sweating is sweet! Don’t apologize for kicking your own booty.
