The Green Gadget

The first gadget worth scrutinizing is one I’ve used a few times, so I think I can give it a fair grade.  Without further ado, I present this:

gadget 004

Why do I need a flourescent green dish with holes in the bottom?

To drain a can of tuna, of course!…

I admit, I had no clue what this was for when I opened it in my Christmas stocking.  Even the plastic fish on the sides gave me no better guess.

The premise is simple: you take a can of tuna, open it, plop the contents into the gadget, and squish down on it with a spoon to drain the liquid.  The execution, however, is not so easy!  Let’s just say more tuna often ends up in the sink…

The verdict?  Squishing down on the tuna with the lid still attached to the can is much easier, less messy and faster.  I give this gadget a 3/5 only because it’s a cheery shade of green (otherwise, probably a 2.5).

Edited to add:  My little sister just read this page and she’s another fortunate owner for a bright green tuna drainer.  She informed me that I’m using it wrong!  According to her, the tuna can is supposed to fit right into the dish and the two plastic fish on the sides act as handles; this should let you push the can down without getting tuna juices (bleh) on your hands.

Makes sense – except my tuna can didn’t fit in the holder!  To properly test out this gadget, I’ll buy a different brand of tuna next time and see if the better brand can fits.  I guess this is the price I pay for buying cheap tuna.  Hmm.  But aren’t all tuna cans the same size?…
